CIAM Australia teaches the Guarino Method of patternmaking that Gaetano Guarino developed in Italy during the 1950s.

Nowadays, carried on by his son Mario, the Guarino method uses a specially designed and graded ruler to construct patterns such as tops, skirts, pants and sleeves. This method therefore requires very little calculation to achieve a perfect fit.

The method is easy to learn, quick, efficient and effective!

There are three courses with an increasing level of difficulty. We require all students to complete the Level 1 Certificate in Patternmaking in order to learn the method. Level 2 and 3 courses are optional for students wishing to further develop their skills in patternmaking and garment construction.

What you will learn

You will learn how to draft patterns and construct perfectly fitting garments. Students use actual measurements to draft patterns and construct garments during classes. We aim to teach students to create any garment they require however this will depend on their level of skills and the complexity of the garment.

Students attend a number of required workshops and produce various garments during the learning process.

The courses cover:

  • Drafting pattern blocks based on actual measurements
  • Adjusting the blocks for a perfect fit
  • How to adjust the blocks for different and more advanced garment styles
  • Developing a pattern for a garment based on a picture or idea
  • Constructing and sewing garments from the patterns created.
